Jeff Lindsay’s career has focused on innovation, invention, and IP protection in many distinct roles. He has experience in academia, large corporations in both the US and Asia, a rapidly growing startup, and an innovation and IP service provider. Jeff seeks to overcome the many potential gaps between inventors and their employers as well as the gaps between corporate knowledge and the emerging possibilities in their field. Every year since 2015, Jeff has been named as “one of the world’s leading IP strategists” in the IAM Strategy 300 publication by IAM Media. Some of Jeff’s approaches are described in Conquering Innovation Fatigue (John Wiley & Sons, 2009) by Jeff Lindsay, Cheryl Perkins, and Mukund Karanjikar.
In addition to consulting through Planet Lindsay, LLC, Jeff is also a Senior Advisor for one of the nation’s leading IP and innovation firms, ipCapital Group. Previously Jeff served as Head of R&D and IP at Lume Deodorant, a startup focused on science-based consumer products for which Jeff wrote their initial patents and more recently created further IP and new product opportunities in his role there from 2019 to 2020. From 2011 to 2019, Jeff was the Head of IP at Asia Pulp & Paper (China) in Shanghai, one of the largest paper companies in the world and part of what may be the world’s largest family-owned company, Sinar Mas of Jakarta, Indonesia. At APP, Jeff led a team of six IP professionals in protecting APP’s brands and in providing guidance and training on innovation strategy.
Jeff was also Corporate Patent Strategist and Senior Research Fellow for Kimberly-Clark (K-C), where he helped guide IP strategy for K-C’s many patent filing groups. At K-C, Jeff believed one of his major accomplishments was bringing the power of ipCapital Group to Kimberly-Clark to implement the Invention on Demand system and to rapidly accelerate K-C’s IP strategy. Significant IP estates were created in several areas such as RFID, business tools involving virtual and augmented reality, and a variety of emerging technologies.
Following K-C, Jeff served as a Director at Innovationedge, a consultancy led by K-C’s former Chief Innovation Officer, Cheryl Perkins. At Innovationedge, Jeff assisted companies in IP strategy, technology transfer, and technology scouting.
Jeff is a former professor at the Institute of Paper Science and Technology (now RBI) at Georgia Tech. He is a registered US patent agent and inventor with 130 US patents. Current interests and projects include consumer product formulation, novel uses of natural ingredients in consumer products, biofilm control, odor control, facial recognition and customizable security systems using the “Private Rules” approach that he has patented.
Jeff has a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah and is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AICHE). Jeff serves as a board member and a Vice President of the Interpreter Foundation (Salt Lake City, Utah). He has also served as an advisor to the Utah-Qinghai Ecopartnership and as board member for the Huang Yi Cong Foundation, one of China’s leading charitable foundations which is largely funded by APP and its employees.
Jeff reads, writes, and speaks Mandarin Chinese and also speaks some German, Hmong, and Swahili.
